Key Takeaways

Lessons Learned

I’ve never held a leadership position like this before, so I learned from a lot of things that I’ve never experienced before. One of the main things I learned was how important planning and organization is. Without proper planning and organization, I never would’ve been able to successfully complete this process. Another thing I learned is how important communication is when working with a group of people. Each week, every active member had a lot of responsibilities and we all had to communicate with each other to make sure things went smoothly. I think the best thing that I learned from holding this position is that it is okay to ask for help. I’ve always been the type of person to try to get everything done by myself, but throughout this process, I learned that it is okay to ask for help when you need it.

One thing that I learned about my leadership style is that I prefer being in a leadership group (the executive council of Sigma Chi in this case), rather than being in a position that is mostly secluded from other leaders. There were times where I had to do things on my own, along with times that I was part of a great group of people that worked together to accomplish things. I found that I felt a lot more comfortable and things seemed easier when I had the support of others. This position also taught me how to take charge of situations and how to be confident in myself as a leader. By putting a lot of time and effort into this position and Sigma Chi, I was able to help mentor and teach the potential members, and we ultimately initiated 11 new men into our fraternity.

Future Plans

Holding this position in Sigma Chi taught me valuable leadership skills that I never would have obtained elsewhere. One thing that I will carry out in future projects is planning things out in detail prior to starting the project. By doing so, I was able to able to execute the tasks more easily as they came, along with making it easier to deal with problems as they came up. Another thing that I think I did well with this position is being organized. I have always been a pretty organized person so this wasn’t as difficult for me, but it is crucial to being successful. One last thing that will benefit me in the future from holding this position, is to speak up when I believe my opinion is valuable to a group. This is something that I have struggled with in the past, but this project helped me gain the confidence to do so.
